Mixed brew is too sweet
Bad Moms (15)
Though it’s no comedy classic and delivers mixed messages, Bad Moms still provides enough laughs to make it worth a watch.
The lead trio supply likeable, diverse performances and sidesplitting scenes include an ace slo-mo supermarket shakedown.
It’s just a shame it piles on the sugar in a conventional climax.
Mechanic: Resurrection (15)
Jason Statham butts heads once again in a risible sequel that’s even worse than its poor predecessor.
Jessica Alba’s damsel would set feminism back decades and Tommy Lee Jones’ Bulgarian arms dealer is one of his worst turns yet.
Not even the action or bone-crunching kills register in a lame actioner made 30 years too late.
The Purge: Election Year (15)
The dystopian B-movie franchise ventures into the world of politics for its third outing.
Some of the views feel worryingly contemporary in our fractured world but writer-director James DeMonaco doesn’t delve too deeply into the rights and wrongs of a broken society; it’s just an excuse for his characters to shoot some guns and try to stay alive.
Frank Grillo rocks with hard-boiled charisma and series newbie Elizabeth Mitchell impresses.
The rest come and go without making much impression and the film stalls too often for chat.
The action becomes repetitive too, although DeMonaco knows how to scorch a memorable image into our brains.
