Kirsty rides off with top prize in calendar contest
Sandford pupil impresses with her road safety poster
A Sandford schoolgirl has used her creative skills to encourage other youngsters to get on their bikes safely.
Kirsty Hutchison, of Sanford Primary, won the overall prize for South Lanarkshire Council’s annual Road Safety Calendar competition for her innovative design: Cycle Safe It’s Not a Race
She received £100, a trophy and her drawing will be used as the illustration for the 2017 South Lanarkshire road safety calendar.
Sandford Primary hold the calendar competition trophy for a year.
Kirsty, who is in Primary Seven, said: “I am absolutely delighted to have won the competition this year.
“I have come second place in Group Three of the competition for the past two years so I’m over the moon at getting first prize this year.”
Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s roads safety forum, Councillor Graham Simpson, said: “Each year the standard of entries just seems to get better and better.
“It was very difficult to pick an overall winner but Kirsty’s design just had that extra eyecatching appeal that ensured it was well deserving of this year’s award.
“During the judging process all the names are kept confidential so there is no way of knowing who has produced what design.
“I would like to thank every pupil in each school who took part in this year’s calendar competition.
“Their support and help ensures that the road safety calendar competition remains such a success.”
Around 14,000 children from 102 schools throughout South Lanarkshire took part in this year’s competition.
Teachers were asked to send in the best five entries in each year category from their school, resulting in 2981 submissions to South Lanarkshire Council’s traffic and transportation section. These entries were whittled down by the road safety team and a judging panel of councillors and traffic and transportation engineers. Other successful pupils from the East Kilbride area included: Emma Macdonald, Mossneuk Primary, P4, who took first in Group Two; Maja Plewinska, St Kenneth’s Primary, P3, who took second in the same group; Nayma Mughis Shaikh, Murray Primary, P6, who took second in Group Three; Rosie Vann , Murray Primary, P7, who was first in Group Four.
Meanwhile, Duncanrig Secondary pupils Amy Toms and Amy Whyte took first and second place respectively in Group Five.
