Beekeeper donations cause a buzz at school

Delighted Sandford pupils welcome cash grant

- Mark Pirie

There was a buzz around Sandford Primary as youngsters accepted a donation for their school garden.

Rose Paterson from Avondale Community Beekeepers (ACB) handed over the azalea shrubs to Holly Archer after the community group received a £250 grant from Action Earth.

The club, which aims to educate the community about the endangered status of bees and maintains hives across Stonehouse and Strathaven, were able to buy the 60 azaleas thanks to the grant.

They have distributed the plants to local schools and to members.

David Paterson of ACB told the News: “We have been keen to get local school children involved in gardening and planting colourful plants and flowers, which the bees really love.

“All of the schools in the area have been really supportive.

“As well as the schools, our members have also been supplied with plants.

“These will go next to our beehives, providing forage for our bees.”

ACB have more than 40 hives situated in the Avon Valley and are committed to re-introducing the Honeybee to the area.

Action Earth is a campaign coordinated by the national charity CSV (Community Service Volunteers) Environment, and is sponsored by Scottish Natural Heritage. It aims to empower people in Scotland to make a positive difference to the quality of their lives by challenging communities to run environmental activities which protect and enhance the environment for future generations.
