EKYM ended 55 years of hurt

-

A penalty shootout win over Argyle in May delivered East Kilbride YM’s first Coronation Cup win in 55 years.

Martin Murphy’s Scottish Amateur League side beat Argyle 4-3 on penalties after the tie had ended 2-2 at Fullarton Park in Glasgow’s East End.

YM were moments from glory when Argyle grabbed a last-gasp equaliser to force the shootout.

But YM keeper Ross Calder was the hero as he saved three penalties, although one of them was retaken and scored.

Sean Kelly missed from the spot for YM but his older brother Ryan made no mistake from 12 yards as he, Anthony Penman, Scott Campbell and Callum Montgomery all scored to bring the trophy back to East Kilbride for the first time since 1961.

It rounded off a fantastic season for the team, who also earned promotion from Division One earlier in the campaign.

Murphy said at the time: “I wasn’t even born when we last won this trophy, so it’s been a while for the club. I have to say we showed great resilience after losing an equaliser with the last kick of the ball. “This is a great achievement.” • On the same weekend East Kilbride FC Amateurs became the first team in the Scottish Amateur Football League to win a fifth consecutive title.

They beat Goldenhill 3-1 at K-Park to secure the record.

The club has risen through the ranks over the past five years winning Division 1B, 1A, Premier Two and Premier One before winning the top flight championship in style this season, losing just once in 17 games.
