In April East Kilbride Sports Council held their annual Sports Personality of the Year Awards, with athlete Emma Canning claiming the top prize.
The 19-year-old Whitemoss Amateur Athletics Club star fought off competition from footballer Lee Alexander, badminton player Diane Gillan, taekwondo athlete Stephanie Willis and trampolinist Amanda Daley to win.
Canning got the judges’votes after winning Scottish and British titles at under-20 level, as well as representing Great Britain twice on the international stage.
Cyclist Kyle Johnston was the adult male champion, but the judging panel chose Canning as the overall winner.
East Kilbride Amateur Swimming Club were the big winners on the night as they claimed three awards.
They took home club of the year for the second consecutive year, while Meg Finnon made it three-in-a-row after she won the junior female title once again. There was also success for EKASC’s Derek McGown, who won coach of the year.
Athlete Aidan Gilbride won the junior male prize, while gymnast Sky Bakke won the junior female under-12 award and roller hockey and ice hockey youngster Conor Gilroy claimed the junior male under-12 gong.

Alan Derrick won the veteran prize, the services to sport award went to EK Cricket Club’s Alan Dickie and Louise Murdoch was administrator of the year thanks to her work as secretary at Spectrum Gymnastics Club. Heather Robertson won the top volunteer prize.
