Labour councillors boost East Kilbride food banks’ supplies
East Kilbride councillors did their bit after South Lanarkshire’s Labour Group organised a collection for some of the area’s food banks in the run up to the festive season.
Among the four selected to receive a donation was the Loaves and Fishes charity in East Kilbride.
There was a wide variety of donations from the group’s councillors including tins, sanitary products and toiletries.
Councillor Lynsey Hamilton, who organised the collection, said:“I would like to thank my colleagues for being so generous with their donations for the collection I organised.
“Food, toiletries and sanitary products are a basic necessity in life and I am pleased that the Labour group could do a bit extra to make life a little easier for families who are struggling in South Lanarkshire this Christmas.”
Council leader Eddie McAvoy added:“It’s a terrible shame, and an indictment of government austerity, that in this day and age there is a need for food banks.
“The council does a great deal to help in these difficult times and I am proud that Labour councillors are acting personally to do their bit too.
“People across South Lanarkshire will benefit from this food drive, with more food in their bellies and, I hope, more hope in their hearts.”
