EK surpassed Ajax world record
East Kilbride FC were on top of the world in November when they received a video message from Edwin van der Sar and 27 crates of beer for breaking Ajax’s world record for the most consecutive wins.
Martin Lauchlan’s men beat BSC Glasgow 3-1 at K-Park to record their 27th straight victory surpassing Johan Cruyff ’s famous Ajax side from 1971/72, who won 26 games on the bounce.
But, incredibly, an Ajax branded van drove on the pitch at full-time to unveil a video message from van der Sar and a van-load of Jupiler beer with a crate for each of their 27 wins.
The story went around the world with news of Kilby’s achievement popping up in far flung destinations such as the Middle East, Australia and even Africa.
A story first highlighted by the News, EK’s winning run caught the attention of the Dutch side as Kilby were about to equal their record.
Following their 26th win, a 4-2 victory at home to Vale of Leithen, Ajax tweeted the official club Twitter account their congratulations.
But no-one could have expected the incredible scenes at K-Park when they surpassed that record the following week.
Unfortunately, the record was not officially recognised by Guinness World Records as EK don’t play “top-level” football, but it is a moment that will go down in the town’s history.
EK boss Martin Lauchlan said: “It’s the biggest achievement in the club’s history and it’s the biggest achievement in my career so far.”
Kilby’s run was ended by Spartans later that month. They lost 1-0 after reaching 30 wins.
