Do CCTV cameras make you feel safer?
12-week pilot scheme at St Leonards
Our front page story last week revealed that a CCTV camera is to be installed at St Leonards Square following a spate of violent crime and youth disorder.
The area’s community council was delighted to win the joint bid with East Kilbride police to pilot the hi-tech security measure to make the community safer.
We asked East Kilbride shoppers if they thought the camera was a good deterrent to crime and disorder.
Robert Gough, 60, of Greenhills, said: “This protects the people of the community. It’s none-vasive and will hopefully help move the yobs on. Being disabled I am more vulnerable and will feel much safer.”
Frank Summers, 70, of Cambuslang, said: “CCTV should be everywhere at all times to keep communities safer. This is a good deterrent but I would want the cameras there full-time.”
Willie Lang, 60, of The Murray, agreed, saying: “If people have nothing to hide, there should be no problems with having this camera. More places need them to make the community safer. I hope they keep the camera up longer than 12 weeks.”
Mr Lang’s 58-year-old wife, Irene, added: “This is a great idea to help fight crime as there has been a lot of problems there lately. I don’t think its like Big Brother is watching you, it’s needed to prevent crime.”
