Branch set for closure

Clydesdale branch in Village to go in cuts plan

- Mark Pirie

Clydesdale Bank have announced that they will close their Village branch.

The Stuart Street outlet is one of 40 to be axed across Scotland with its doors shutting for good on May 30.

Councillor Alice Marie Mitchell said: “Losing the bank after all these years would be a real shame.”

An East Kilbride branch of the Clydesdale Bank will close later this year.

The outlet on Stuart Street in the Village will shut its doors for the final time on May 30 – after it was revealed that it would be among 40 cut in Scotland.

Around 200 jobs are at risk across the country.

A spokesperson for the branch said that it is not yet known how many staff will be impacted, with redeployment opportunities to be offered to some employees.

Customers will also be notified of their nearest branch and ATM.

East Kilbride MSP Linda Fabiani is set for talks with bank bosses in a bid to reduce the impact on staff and the town.

She said: “I’ve arranged to meet the management of the bank to discuss concerns of customers and staff, so I’m keen to hear from those who will be affected.

“I also want to know more about the arrangement between the bank and the local Post Office which I hope will reduce the inconvenience for many who have been using the Clydesdale branch in the Village for a long time.

“The closure is a sad loss to the local community – and I am keen to find out what the plans are for the site and building once it closes.”

East Kilbride Central North councillor Alice Marie Mitchell feels that pensioners will be hardest hit by the closure.

The Labour member said: “There are lots of people in the Village and round about who need the face-to-face service a local bank provides.

“It’s only a short walk to get to the bank from the sheltered and amenity housing in the area and there are lots of pensioners who use the branch.

“There are plenty of local businesses and community groups from all over East Kilbride who do their banking there too. Whenever you go in it’s busy and the staff are always so friendly and helpful.

“Losing the bank after all these years would be a real shame.

“It’s served the town for as long as I can remember and it brings footfall to the Village.

“Having a reliable, local bank in the

Village is good for the community and it’s good for local businesses.”

Gavin Opperman, customer banking director at the Clydesdale Bank, said they will be working with customers to support them through the change.

He said: “While the decision to close any branch is never an easy one, it is important that we, in line with other banks operating in the UK market, continue to respond to changes in the way customers want to bank with us.

“The changes announced continue our journey towards a model that combines an enhanced digital platform with a right-sized branch network, allowing customers to interact with us through a wide range of channels – mobile, online, telephone, in-branch – whenever and however they want.”
