Should there be a maximum wage cap?
Labour leader attacks fat cat salaries
Jeremy Corbyn is calling for a cap on the maximum wage high-earners rake in – in a bid to address inequality in Britain.
The Labour leader has set out plans to curb boardroom pay and place ceilings on excessive earnings.
His radical idea has been widely criticised by economists but he has argued that radical action is needed to stop “poverty pay” at the bottom.
We asked East Kilbride shoppers if they thought it was time we had a maximum wage.
Robert Shaw, 41, said: “I think it’s a good idea in theory, but Britain could then lose people who are at the top of their game who would go abroad or elsewhere to earn higher wages.”
Gran Marlene White, 54, was all for a maximum wage cap, saying: “It’s not fair that we have a minimum wage and not a maximum. There is so much injustice with this government I think this is what’s needed.”
Twenty-year-old Callum McGowan (pictured with puppy Winston) disagreed with the move.
He said: “I’m not a fan of Corbyn and don’t agree on capping higher earners. If you’ve got a good job you should be getting good money.”
Although Don Craig, 64, doesn’t back Corbyn politically, he thought some form of cap on wages was a good idea. He said: “Some people – like footballers – get paid obscene amounts of money so there should be a cap but I think Corbyn is just making a mess of Labour.”
