Anniversary is opportunity for our great town
Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the East Kilbride News.
This year will be important to so many of you. But it is also important for our town. Seventy years ago, East Kilbride was designated as Scotland’s first new town. The official anniversary is in early May.
On page six of today’s paper, East Kilbride West councillor David Watson says this milestone is a chance for the town to regain its identity.
We share his views and believe such a landmark should be acknowledged and celebrated.
Already on social media, people are talking about East Kilbride new town’s 70th anniversary and we feel that conversation should be had with everyone who lives here and feels passionate about the town.
How do you think this anniversary should be marked?
And is this the catalyst for bringing communities together? We want to know your thoughts and opinions.

There was bad news for East Kilbride last week when the Clydesdale Bank announced that their branch in the Village would be closing.
We spoke with customers and you can read our reports on pages four and five.
It has been pointed out that the bank currently resides in a quite magnificent building. We hope that, if there is no change of heart by Clydesdale, its next tenants make fine use of it.
Fly-tipping is in the News again and it appears the council is waging war on those responsible – check out page eight.
And East Kilbride MSP Linda Fabiani has called Network Rail to task on page 12, regarding the town’s rail service.
