East Kilbride’s star fundraiser Jenny Cook has been nominated for another top award – Rotary International Young Citizen 2017.

East Kilbride Rotary Club put the inspirational young ambassador forward for the coveted prize in recognition of her incredible charity work for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and the Catherine McEwan Foundation.

The 13-year-old from Stewartfield, who has suffered from ulcerative colitis since she was four years old, was crowned Young Scot of the Year 2016 after raising a phenommenal £112,000 for her dedicated charities.

And, remarkably, the big-hearted Williamwood High School pupil is now well on her way to hitting the £300,000 mark.

The Rotary International Great Britain and Ireland (Rotary) Young Citizen Awards (YCA) were created to celebrate the achievements and commitment of inspiring young people across Great Britain and Ireland.

EK Rotary Club publicity convenor Ray Porrelli said: “Last February, Jenny was invited along to talk at East Kilbride Rotary Club Friday lunch and left a lasting impression on club members such that the club followed her fundraising journey during the following months.

“This brave and dedicated young lady battled health issues from the age of four, led an active life as a teenage school pupil alongside raising over £287,000 for Yorkhill Childrens Charity and the Catherine McEwan Foundation.

“Acknowledging Jenny’s selfless commitment of service to others the Rotary Club are proud to put her name forward for Rotary International Young Citizen of the year.”

Rotary Young Citizen winners receive a trophy, certificate and a prize of £500 to be nominated for use of a charity or project that the winners are involved with.

Jenny told the News: “I was delighted that EK Rotary had thought of nominating me for this award. I really enjoyed speaking at the club. It will also help raise more awareness for Inflammatory Bowel Disease which is the most important thing.”

The awards will be presented at the Rotary Annual Conference in Manchester from April 7-9.
