Pupils up for top award

Gaelic film project

- Nicola Findlay

A group of first-year pupils at Calderglen High School have made the shortlist for a prestigious national Gaelic film award.

It is the first time the school have entered the FilmG competition in the nine years it has been running.

Their entry – Eadar Dà Bheachd – is a humorous take on the theme ‘Strì’ (endeavour/conflict) which sees the class fall out over their ideas for a film they’re working on.

The winners will be announced at the prestigious FilmG awards ceremony taking place at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow on Friday, February 17.

Class teacher, Donna MacDonald, told the News: “Our Gaelic first year were asked, at the last minute, if they would be willing to take advantage of a gap in FilmG’s timetable.

“Having just returned to the department, I didn’t feel I had the time to get them up to speed with everything they had missed and do FilmG this year on top of that as there is a lot of prep involved.

“To be thrown into it with no script at all and no warning was a huge challenge.

“This makes me even more proud of what 1C3 have achieved in reaching the shortlist.

“They had two days to script, rehearse, film and edit a short film.

“On the first day they were coached by Arthur Donald, a wellrespected Gaelic actor and Cailean Collier, who taught them all the technical aspects of filming and editing. The class used the fact that they were so unprepared as our inspiration and managed to film most of it on the first day.

“It was a very positive experience for them and, as we are so lucky to receive our own industry-grade filming equipment from the local authority, we are now working on a film project of our own.”
