East Kilbride News

Telling the stories of our selfless charity stars

- Colin Paterson

Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the East Kilbride News.

Society would break down if there were not folk prepared to volunteer and do their bit for charity.

We feature two kind-hearted individuals in today’s paper.

On pages four and five, you can read about how East Kilbride personal trainer Craig Russell is embarking on a tough 24-hour treadmill challenge in a bid to raise awareness of mental illness. The 33-year-old former soldier has had his own battles to fight – we wish him well in his charity endeavour.

We also carry the news, on page nine, of Denis Curran MBE’s decision to stand down as Loaves and Fishes chairman later this year.

It is a role he has carried out for around a quarter of a century. While trying to help others, he has implored politicians to do more for those suffering hard times.

Recently in the News, he insisted the food bank crisis now was worse than during the Second World War.

That food banks are required in the United Kingdom in the 21st century is a disgrace and we, the voting public, should be outraged.

Check out the latest edition of our Roadwatch feature on page 12.

This is a new weekly item designed to help you avoid road closures and roadworks. However, bear in mind that planned closures and works are subject to change and could also take longer than stated.

On pages 20 and 21, we feature talented art and design students from Calderglen High School. There is a big helping of district news on page 34.

If you’re from Strathaven, Chapelton, Glassford, Thorntonhall, Eaglesham or Gilmourton, and want your news published, get in touch using one of the methods on the left-hand side.
