Should Donald Trump have a UK state visit?

East Kilbride reacts to new president

- Mark Pirie

Thousands of people in East Kilbride and Strathaven have signed a petition calling for Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK to be cancelled.

The petition argues that any state visit to these shores by the new president of the United States would “cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen” and passed over one million signatures.

Across Lanarkshire, people from the East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow constituency were the most strongly opposed to Trump holding court with the Queen.

The News took to the streets to find out what the people of East Kilbride thought about all this.

Gilbert Thomson from Westwood told the News: “I think you need to give the guy a chance.

“I don’t have anything against him coming here.”

East Kilbride shopper Heather Thomson said: “At the end of the day he is the President of the United States.

“Whether you like that, or you hate it, he is a leader. We haven’t stopped anyone else coming here.”

Billy Gordon commented: “I’ve not really got a problem with it.

“It’s not going to stop people who want to support him whether he comes to Britain or not.”

And Jim Blackely from Strathaven added: “I honestly think it’s been blown out of proportion.

“Trade and jobs is more important than personal views.”

At the end of the day, he is the president of the United States. He is a leader. Heather Thomson
