Drummers top bill at festival
MugenTaiko Drumfest ready to go
A Strathaven-based group have been moving to the beat of their own drum for nearly 25 years.
Now they are looking forward to becoming a headline act at the Young at Heart festival.
Japanese-themed drumming group Mugen Taiko Drumfest, who have been based in a farmhouse on the outskirts of Strathaven for two decades, will help bring the festival to a close at East Kilbride’s Village Theatre this Saturday night.
The unique show and sound will be boosted by special guests for the show including Uneme Taiko – who are the all-Japan Taiko champions in their age group – for their only Scottish date.
Founder Miyuki Williams is delighted to be able to play a local show after touring Europe and hopes to see plenty of smiling faces as they round off the festival.
“We spend a lot of time touring rather than playing in the area around us,” she told the News.
“That’s why we are looking forward to playing in East Kilbride. It has been about three years since we played the Village Theatre – it’s not one that comes around every day for us.
“I’m particularly excited by Uneme Taiko; they will put on an incredible show.
“It will be a big show with a lot of noise and excitement!
“I don’t think anyone that comes along will be left disappointed.”
The group are one of a number of great acts and exhibitions across East Kilbride as part of the festival.
At 2pm today, at East Kilbride Arts Centre, there is a free recital, Sergeant – Watt Duo.
3D in 3 weeks can be enjoyed from 10am at the Central Library tomorrow. Some Kind of Sanctuary begin a three-night 8pm slot at the arts centre tomorrow.
U2 360 starts at 8pm on Friday night at the Village Theatre.
The festival is aimed at helping people over the age of 50 to celebrate the arts.
Tickets for the Mugen Taiko event, which starts at 6.30pm, are priced at £17 for adults and £14 for concessions.
