Speakers club welcomes Clarkston guests

-

At its latest meeting, East Kilbride Speakers Club welcomed members from Clarkston Speakers Club as its guests for the evening.

The first speaker introduced by the meeting’s chairman, Ken Murray, was EK’s Chris Smyth.

He delivered a very informative speech with a countryside theme that included a description of how surprisingly hi-tech dairy farming has become, with cows being micro-chipped so that they make their own way into the byre where they are milked automatically by machines that require no assistance from the farmers.

Clarkston SC provided the next speaker, Keli Lyttle; the purpose of whose speech was to exhibit the techniques used to convince an audience that you really mean what you are saying.

Keli did this admirably with an impassioned plea to the members of the audience to join her in volunteer work to benefit the community.

East Kilbride’s Toni Dinwoodie followed by speaking with great enthusiasm as he provided an insight into the world of competitive chess and dispelled any notions of it just being a studious game of contemplation but also one that develops tension and great rivalry in the players.

Allan Clark of Clarkston SC concluded the main speeches by venting his spleen in making an ardent plea for greater exposure to, and an increased variety of, classical music concerts to include the works of more modern musicians rather than the current reliance on a few 19th century and earlier composers.

The topics for the impromptu speaking session were presented by East Kilbride’s Bob Hunter and members from both the hosts and guests responded well to the challenge.

The views from someone outwith the club on the level of success of its meetings is always valuable and this was provided by Clarkston’s Bernard Ruddy in his general evaluation of East Kilbride’s programme for the evening.

The next club meeting is tomorrow and details can be obtained from secretary Paul Munday on (01355) 223894.
