Tories announce council candidates

South Lanarkshir­e Conservati­ves have announced their candidates for May’s council elections.

Candidates will stand in each East Kilbride ward, as well as Avondale and Stonehouse.

East Kilbride South will be contested by Alexandra Herdman andWillie Chalmers will go for Central South. Darren Clyde is running for Central North, Ian Harrow is fighting inWest and Jim Ferguson in East.

Avondale and Stonehouse councillor Graeme Campbell will also attempt to hold his seat.

Current council group leader Hamish Stewart said:“We have a superb group of highly-talented candidates who are already campaignin­g hard and getting a great response on the doorsteps.

“I have high hopes that they will do very well at the ballot box on May 4.”

Councillor Graham Simpson, who is standing down as a councillor in East Kilbride, said:“Increasing­ly, people are turning to the Scottish Conservati­ves to send a message to Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP that we don’t want another independen­ce referendum and that we are sick of their separatist agenda.

“We are the party to take on the SNP nationally and here in South Lanarkshir­e.”
