- Mark Pirie

Unemployment in East Kilbride has dropped.

Across East Kilbride there was a narrow one per cent drop in claimants from Janurary 2017 to February, according to the latest Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) figures.

Annually across the town there was a decrease in unemployment by 20 per cent.

The East Kilbride South area has the highest number of claimants in town with 133.

Central North and Central South had an equal number, both with 132 in February. East Kilbride East remained the same monthon-month with 114. East Kilbride West once again had the least with 44.

Avondale also enjoyed an annual drop of 37 per cent, with the number of monthly claimants dropping by four per cent.

East Kilbride MSP Linda Fabiani was delighted with the results and said: “It is, of course, welcome news that the number of people claiming in East Kilbride is significantly down on last year’s figures.

“Through efforts from the Scottish Government, there has been focus on developing opportunities through apprenticeships and training.” On the box
