An East Kilbride food bank is celebrating a cash boost.

Community stalwart Denis Curran MBE accepted a cheque for just over £200 from the South Lanarkshire and East Kilbride branch of the TUC on behalf of Nerston-based Loaves and Fishes.

Denis is standing down as chairman of the charity this year to spend more time with his wife, Cathy, who has helped him run the food bank for a number of years.

Chairperson of SL&EK TUC, John Keenan, told the News: “We organised two community showings of the film “I Daniel Blake” including at the Arts Centre in East Kilbride.

“These events were free to the public and the venues were fully booked.

“Representatives from the local CAB offices were present running stalls to offer advice or to arrange appointments for clients if necessary.

“We had two speakers at each event followed by some discussion about the issues raised in the film after which we asked the audience if they could make a donation which we would give to local food banks recommended by CAB.

“We collected £205 at the East Kilbride event which we were delighted to hand over to Denis Curran from Loaves and Fishes.” 090317foodbank_1

Denis said: “We were very grateful to the TUC for this donation which will help us support families struggling to make ends meet in the town.”
