Legion HQ celebrates being back on its feet

Languishing branch was“20 minutes from closure”

- Mark Pirie

Legion Scotland’s East Kilbride branch is back in business – after being just 20 minutes from closure last year.

The historic headquarters of the town’s branch was facing closure until a new committee took over in the final moments.

And the East Mains social club is busier than ever with chairman Eddie Hayes, secretary John DaPrato and treasurer John Gilles being at the helm for just over 12 months.

The Legion had previously been at risk after the previous board resigned.

In a recent ‘Our People’ feature, Bobby Russell spoke of how the situation has turned around.

Eddie told of his delight at the new lease of life after repairs and with the East Kilbride driving test centre moving to the site.

He said: “We’re in a much better position than we were a year ago, that’s for sure. We have got it re-roofed and that has stopped the leaks.

“We’ve given the halls a new coat of paint and got new lighting in the function suite. It’s been a whirlwind but we’ve enjoyed it.”

Secretary John Daprato was keen to keep the business growing, with plans to do work on the bar and create a beer garden.

John put forward himself, Eddie and John Gilles for the managerial positions to replace the old board, and admits that although they were unsure at the time it has worked out for the best.

He said: “When we heard about the old board stepping down I put us all forward.

“At the time we didn’t really know what we were getting into – and I bet Eddie and John said a few words about me under their breath!

“We have got some big plans for the future here. The next thing is the bar. We’d love to have the beer garden in by the summer.”

Eddie feels like the best thing for him has been the faces of former members when they see the newlook Legion– and also attracting a different age demographic.

He continued: “It has been stressful but when you see it coming together it’s totally worth it. There have been ex-members returning to the Legion and we are bringing in a younger crowd.

“The people who used to come here can’t believe the difference.

“With the driving lessons as well now, teenagers start to realise you are here and can hold their functions.

“It’s been a crazy year but that’s the way you want it!”
