Pupils are Euro stars

- Nicola Findlay

An East Kilbride primary school topped the table for the fifth time – winning the South Lanarkshire heat of the Euroquiz.

Pupils from across South Lanarkshire recently competed in the local heats of a Scotland-wide quiz on Europe which has been organised by the Scottish European Educational Trust.

Youngsters competed in teams of four and St Leonard’s Primary ran out winners for the fifth year in a row. They will go on to represent South Lanarkshire at the national final which will be held this May at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh where they will compete against all of the other local authority winners.

As well as questions covering history, geography, sport, culture, and the EU, Euroquiz has a language round where pupils can test their knowledge of French, German, Spanish or Italian.

The St Leonard’s team, under the guidance of teacher Edel Scott, was made up of Louise Quinn Hitchcock, Connor McCall, Ciaran Brownlie, Amy Irvine and first reserve Lennon Wells.

Head teacher Des Timmons, said: “I am very proud of what the pupils achieved.

“I know they felt a little under pressure as St Leonard’s have won the South Lanarkshire Euroquiz heat for the past four years but they worked really hard in the Euroquiz Club at lunchtime and after school to make sure they were really knowledgeable about all things European.

“I am confident that they’ll do us proud in the Scottish final in May.”
