EK U20s secure the League Cup

-

Liam Craig scored a dramatic late winner to deliver the League Cup for East Kilbride Under-20s.

And now he’s itching to make his mark for Kilby’s senior team.

The 18-year-old winger (below) took his tally to an impressive 33 goals in 26 games with his stoppagetime strike in the 1-0 win over Cumbernauld Colts.

Despite his goal-scoring exploits, the U20 skipper has yet to make an appearance for Martin Lauchlan’s Lowland League leaders but he hopes that is about to change after helping the club claim their first piece of silverware this season.

Craig, from Lindsayfield, told the News:“It was a great feeling to score

the winner. I was buzzing and ran over to the bench to celebrate. All the boys had worked so hard and to win it like that was brilliant.

“Colts gave us a really tough game, so we are happy to win the trophy.

“My aim is to keep improving and push onto get a place in the first team .”

Craig has been training with the first team at least once a week

And he added:“Training with the likes of Sean Winter, Adam Strachan and David Proctor has made me a better player.

“A lot of the players at our level haven’t had that kind of experience.“

After little goal mouth action the clash at New Tinto Park in Govan burst into life in the final 10 minutes.

Jack McMahon twice blocked goalbound shots as Colts missed two crucial chances.

At the other end, Michael Anderson almost won it for Kilby but his 18-yard volley crashed off the crossbar. In the 94th minute Craig stole the ball before driving into the box and slamming home the winner.

U20s head coach Graeme Mullin said: “It was one of Liam’s quieter games, but we always know he just needs one chance to score. We know we can rely on him and the number of goals he’s scored this season is incredible.”
