Terror threat will not change way that we live

- Colin Paterson

First things first – the thoughts and prayers of everyone at the News are with those affected by last Wednesday’s terror attack in Westminster.

Four people, including a serving police officer, were killed when Khalid Masood embarked on his reign of terror. He himself was shot dead.

There has been a huge outpouring of grief, naturally, and dozens of floral tributes have been left outside parliament and on Westminster Bridge.

On pages 4 and 5 of today’s paper, our MP, Dr Lisa Cameron, tells of her experience last week but also goes on to explain how we should not and will not give in to terrorists.

As if to prove the point, normality returned within 24 hours of Masood’s attack. Folk went to work, dropped their kids off at school and socialised.

Of course, there is sadness at what happened and one cannot imagine the heartbreak felt by the families mourning loved ones no longer with us.

But everyone carries on for that is what must be done; sending a message to terrorists wherever they may be that the people of this land will not change our lives through fear.

Of course, politicians too have a responsibility and while it is absolutely right to regularly review matters of security – both their own and indeed the nation’s – we should be wary of knee-jerk reactions or the passing of tougher legislation in response to and to counter what we saw while events are still relatively fresh in the mind.

On a lighter note, we have our regular competitions in this week’s paper. Win an East Kilbride Shopping Centre gift card on page 16 and a party for up to eight kids at Di Maggio’s on page 27.
