INDY DEBATE WAS SUSPENDED

A debate on a second independen­ce referendum was being held at Holyrood as the tragic events in London unfolded.

As news began filtering through to MSPs some began to leave the chamber, although initially they were told by East Kilbride MSP and deputy presiding officer Linda Fabiani it was“business as usual”.

However, half an hour later debate was suspended.

With MSPs clearly distracted by the attack on Westminste­r, presiding officer, Ken Macintosh said the debate couldn’t continue.

Ms Fabiani, right, said:“The decision to suspend proceeding­s is a decision of the Parliament through the Business Bureau – all parties. Whilst I was in the chair the Business Bureau was meeting, and taking advice from parliament security and Police Scotland.

“Business proceeded until the severity of the situation was confirmed. I believe the decision to suspend was the correct one on this occasion. Business resumed the next day.”

terrorists – with the victims always in our thoughts – we must get back to a sense of normality and go back about the work of parliament.

“We have to be determined to continue our work and send out a clear message to the terrorists that they are not going to achieve what they are hoping for – we will not let terrorism win.”
