David Watson insists he won’t allow areas of the College Milton Industrial Estate to become a dumping ground.

The SNP East Kilbride West councillor says rubbish has been allowed to mount up on verges and in woodland.

He added: “It is a total eyesore and not a good advert to help attract businesses.” A moment of fate on a Glasgow Fair Monday brought together Calderwood couple Christina and John Campbell – and they now celebrate 60 years together.

In 1952, Christina, known as Ina, and John met at the Saltcoats carnival.

They were both out for the evening when fate brought them together as each, with their friend, climbed into the same waltzer.

They got chatting and became friends, continuing to meet up.

After getting married, they moved to their first house in Ayrshire before they were allocated a property in Westwood in August 1962 as former soldier John, who was a qualified butcher, found work at JW Galloway’s abattoir in Calderwood.

Ina stopped working and was a full-time mother and housewife, staying at home and raising their three children.

Son Jamie said his parents have had strong ties with East Kilbride since their chance meeting.

“Mum and dad have lived in the same house in East Kilbride since they arrived in the new town and have seen the area change and grow during that time,”he said.

“Two of their three children still live in East Kilbride while the third now lives in Castlemilk.”
