Cash-strapped schools in East Kilbride had to stump up thousands of pounds – or axe popular sports and after-school activities. One secondary school had already cancelled its Saturday morning football – much to the anger of pupils, parents and staff.

Folk in Strathaven found it hard to believe their eyes when 1494 plastic ducks could be seen “happily” swimming down a local burn. The ducks were released in a good cause, however, by firemen from EK and elsewhere for a charity which worked in Russia.
