GUTTED CYCLIST TAKEN FOR A RIDE

Specialist bike worth £2500 stolen from garage

- Nicola Findlay

A cyclist has been left thousands of pounds out of pocket after thieves broke into a lock-up and stole his highend bike.

Furious mechanic Mark Donegan was shocked to discover the padlock of his St Leonards garage had been forced open and the yellow SFR stunt jumper pedal bike worth £2500 – along with two televisions – had been stolen.

The dad-of-one had transported the specialised bike from his former home in The Murray to the lock-up of his new house in Glen Ogilvie which he recently moved to with his partner and their young child.

And with the better weather coming in last week, he decided to cycle to work.

Mark told the News: “Up until last week the bike had been in the cupboard of my old flat in The Murray – but I decided to bring it to the new place on the Sunday night.

“I came back to St Leonards and put it in the lock-up but when I went out on the Tuesday morning I realised the door was slightly ajar.

“At first I thought I hadn’t locked it but when I lifted it and went inside I realised the lock had been broken. All I can think is someone has seen me put the bike away on the Sunday evening.

“I am totally sickened to be honest – you lock things away thinking they will be safe but then someone comes along, forces their way in and helps themselves.

“It’s scunnering to say the least – it’s not a cheap bike, it cost me £2500 so I am going to be out of pocket no matter what.”

Mark added: “I was speaking to my neighbour and he said he came out on the Monday morning and saw the garage door was up and thinking that I had just left it open, pushed it back down.

“The chances are the bike has been taken between the Sunday night and the Monday morning.

“It very distinctive and is bright yellow so if anyone sees it dumped or is offered it for sale, if they could get in touch with police.”

PC Lucie Black, of East Kilbride police, told the News: “Between 4pm on Sunday, April 23 and 8.30am the following morning, entry was forced to a lock-up garage at Glen Ogilvie.

“Property to the value of approximately £3500 was taken.

“This included a distinctive bright yellow SFR stunt bike.” PC Black added: Police are appealing for information to help in their enquiries. Please call Police Scotland on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
