St Kenneth’s Primary crowned county champions
Young athletes from St Kenneth’s Primary claimed eight medals at the South Lanarkshire cross country finals.
The area finals had East Kilbride, Rutherglen/ Cambuslang, Hamilton and Clydesdale teams taking part.
St Kenneth’s qualified after coming out on top in the East Kilbride qualifiers earlier in the year and they did not disappoint, bringing home four gold team medals for EK, one silver team prize and two individual bronze awards.
In the P6 girls’ race St Kenneth’s were represented by Holly Murdoch, Olivia Moan and Jessica Haig. The girls all ran well and Holly earned a silver team medal for East Kilbride.
In the P6 boys race St Kenneth’s were represented by Michael McKinley and Callum Wright. Michael ran a fantastic race and was determined not to give up on his third position throughout. He gained an individual bronze medal and a team gold for East Kilbride. Callum Wright also ran an excellent race.
In the P7 girls race St Kenneth’s had three qualifiers: Leah Muirhead, Ruby Byrne and Lily Scarlett Burns. Leah ran a very determined race and battled over the line in third place.
Lily Scarlett Burns and Ruby Byrne finished just outside the medals. East Kilbride area were again team gold medal winners.
The final race was for P7 boys. St Kenneth’s had Rian MacLean and Szabolcs Kormos competing and Rian ran an amazing race to claim bronze, with Szabolcs finishing close behind him.
But they still won team golds with their results contributing to EK being crowned champions overall at this age group.
Coach Richard Wyatt said: “St Kenneth’s pupils performed terrifically well on a challenging course.
“This is magnificent, considering they were taking on the best in the county. I am so proud of the squad.”
Holly Murdoch said: “I was very happy with my performance.
“The course was so tough that one of the hills had a nickname, the anklebreaker, because it was a steep and diagonal hill.
“But we all finished races strongly.”
