Double delight for Colts
Claremont Colts were celebrating last week after scooping two prizes at the South Lanarkshire Disability Awards.
And there was also success for Whitehills badminton and athletics star Diane Gillan, as she took home the adult female award.
Football club Colts were crowned club of the year at the ceremony in the Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds and their coach Steven Moffat picked up a merit award in the coach of the year category.
Claremont’s white team were runners-up in the junior team of the year section, losing out to Lanark Grammar’s Learning Disability football team.
Delighted Colts coach Elaine Rinn told the News: “It was a brilliant week for the team.
“We had two teams win at the national fives, and another came fifth in their group, so it was another great day to round it off for the team.
“There is a really positive mood about the team and all the players are really concentrated on their football.
“It was great for Stevie to pick up the award; he works so hard every week. “We are all really proud.” Guest speakers on the day included Stewartfield’s Euan McLaughlin, a rising star in the table tennis world, who gave an inspirational talk on the route he has set himself on with the hope of reaching his dream of competing in the Paralympics.
The 21-year-old has set himself a punishing training schedule which starts at 5am but it is paying off with a place in the national team and tournament success.
World Champion and Paralympian Stephen McGuire from Hamilton was also in attendance and he spoke about his career in the sport of Boccia.
Vice Chair of South Lanarkshire Disability Sport Ian Gray said: “Each and every one of these athletes are a great advert for disability sport and I hope their achievements will encourage more individuals to get involved in disabled sport.”
