Where are Christian values?

-

Dear Editor,

It’s interesting to hear Theresa May talk about Christian values. There is nowhere in Christian values that tells us to deprive the poor.

Christian values and beliefs tell us to look after the poor and disadvantaged.

Yet we have government who do the exact opposite.

People get sanctioned – that means they get no benefits whatsoever; in turn, that means not only can they not feed themselves, they cannot feed their children which means they go hungry.

It also means that if they have bank payments to be paid, they are now in deeper debt with charges.

However, the Scottish Government say they want every child to achieve their utmost. How is a child who goes to school cold and hungry going to achieve their best? This happens on a daily basis.

In the 1950s, we were told we had the best education system in the world. What happened?

In the war years right up to 1953 we had ration books; there was a world war food shortage yet mothers went into their purse, took out money and paid for groceries. In 2017 there is no world war, food gets dumped by suppliers yet people are coming to food banks because they have no money to buy food. There is something drastically wrong.

Our politicians are on thousands of pounds a month and a mother can’t buy a tin beans to feed her children.

Is there anyone who can explain?’ Denis Curran MBE, Loaves and Fishes chairman
