Revealing favourite place in new town Marking a milestone year for EK
As part of East Kilbride new town’s anniversary celebrations a special souvenir EK @ 70 supplement full of golden memories was included with last week’s edition of the News.
East Kilbride was designated to be Scotland’s first-ever new town on May 6, 1947. Seven decades later, the thriving community is now home to around 75,000 people.
To mark this milestone, we asked shoppers what their favourite place in East Kilbride is.
Scott Fraser, 28, of Whitehills said: “I like Stewartfield because it’s peaceful.
“I like taking a walk around the loch and using the community sports centre.”
Eighteen-year-old Greg Kelly, from Stewartfield, is a member of East Kilbride Athletics Club.
He said: “The John Wright Sports Centre is my favourite place because I spend most of my time there training. Unlike other areas it has its own running track which is great.”
Westwood gran Winnie Healy, 78, has lived in the town for 53 years and loves to spend her time in the shopping centre. She said: “The town centre is great. It’s wheelchair-friendly and Shopmobility really helps me get out and about. For me it’s a nice place to spend the day.”
Mike Steele, 67, travels from Irvine just to shop in the town centre. He said: “There is a great variety of shops and, most importantly, it’s undercover for when the weather is bad.”
