May events The month of May is very busy in Carmunnock. Gala Week commenced on Friday the fifth and culminates with Gala Day this Saturday. The following weekend, Sunday, May 21, there will be a celebratio­n to honour Carmunnock Parish Church’s links with the Covenanter­s. This will take the form of a Conventicl­e, which will take place in the church yard. Members of the Carmunnock Drama Group and the Guides in period costumes will also take part. The Scottish Covenanter­s Memorial Society will lay a wreath at the grave of Andrew Morton, a Covenanter Martyr. Tea and coffee will be served in the Clason Hall after the service. This is all part of the church’s 250th anniversar­y celebratio­ns.

Plant sale Don’t forget to hand in your order forms for your bedding plants. You can hand them to the Guides or into Booth’s store. Orders can be collected at the Clason Hall on Saturday, May 20. Tea and coffee with homebaking will be served in the hall. Gala Week Carmunnock’s Gala Week got off to a flying start with a great adult disco last Friday in the Village Recreation Club. A good attendance gave it a terrific atmosphere. Saturday afternoon was more sedate, with a lovely cream tea presented by the Guild, with a photograph­ic exhibition by the Heritage Society. The Gala Court were also in attendance. Lovely baking and a good chance for a chinwag. Wednesday evening will be the sporty time with fun runs for all the primary-school children. At 7pm there will by an event for S1 and over. There is a £1 entry fee for these events. Friday night is the football matches for all ages. All the sports events are held in the King George V Playing Fields. On Gala Day, the Queen’s parade will leave the Clason Hall at 1.40pm to make its way to the King George V Playing Fields for the crowning ceremony which will take place at 2pm. The children’s fancy dress competitio­n will judged by the new Gala Queen Iona Wright. All the stalls and events will begin following the fancy dress competitio­n. Two major events will be the Clan Scotland’s cycle display team and the Public House Orchestra will present an afternoon of Blues and Rock and Roll. Programmes, which are your entry ticket, are available from Both’s Village Store and are priced at £2.50 each. This should be another wonderful afternoon of fun. However, in the event that the weather is unkind, then all the events will be moved to Carmunnock Primary School. Support the local gala committee who do a fantastic job organising all the events.
