Minority rule in council is a concern in EK
The SNP group have become the single largest party at South Lanarkshire Council following the result of the local elections.
Now they will get to work in a minority administration, marking the first time in 23 years that the local authority will not be led by Labour.
John Wright from Westwood admitted he had concerns about any of the parties being able to get through their policies without a majority.
“There will be a lot of arguments and friction I imagine,” he said. “The SNP have a big task on their hands.”
Linda Robinson has little faith in any administration but wants to see action.
“To be honest, I don’t really care about any of them,” she said. “I would like to see them clean up East Kilbride, though. There is dog dirt everywhere.”
Robert Peacock from Westwood admitted he wasn’t happy to see the SNP in power — but hoped parties would work together for EK.
“I don’t have a huge amount of faith in the SNP but with the minority government there could be more balance,” he said.
However, shopper John Higgins admits he has become disillusioned with the SNP and hopes they focus on improving EK now they are in power.
“I voted for independence but not much seems to have happened since then,” he said.
