Highland games are on duo’s bucket list

Carmunnock Highland Games look set to have an internatio­nal feel once again – with two visitors hoping to tick the event off their bucket list.

Two Belgians will travel to the village to cross competing in a highland games off their lists to mark their 40th birthdays.

According to Doug Edwards, who is the former organiser and still heavily involved, they will be among many travelling from across the globe for the ninthannua­l event.

On the day there will be traditiona­l events including log fighting, freestyle combat and stick fighting.

Local folk will also be able to get involved in team and individual events. You can try your luck at haybale rolling, the two-man pole push, and the mini caber.

Doug told the News: “It’s certainly going to be an internatio­nal audience.

“There has been huge interest from oversees.

“I always think it’s really interestin­g when people come over from other countries. It really puts the village on the map.

“We have always been told that the games is the most atmospheri­c in Scotland – even though it’s a wee games.

“We need local support for these kinds of things so hopefully the community can come out and back us.

“Now we are just hoping for good weather!”

On the day there will also be other attraction­s including a beer garden and a bar area with live music.

European champion Vladislav Tulacek and Scottish Highland Games champion Lucasz Wenta will be attending the games.

Gates open at 11.30am and the opening parade will begin just after noon on Sunday, May 28.
