Big clean-up at fire site

- Nicola Findlay

Volunteers at the Langlands Moss nature reserve have vowed to fight back after a blaze ravaged the beauty spot.

Friends of Langlands Moss have arranged a clean-up operation following the fire.

The group’s chair Maureen Potter said: “We would welcome as much help as possible.”

A clean-up of a muchloved beauty spot ravaged by fire has been organised.

Langlands Moss Nature Reserve went up in smoke when a massive area of heathland and a substantial part of the boardwalk caught fire.

Investigations by police to establish the cause of the blaze are ongoing.

Twenty firefighters battled for more than four hours to bring the fire under control, inset, and smoke could be seen for miles.

The incident comes just months after vandals torched a section of boardwalk, causing £30,000 worth of damage.

Work to restore it was set to get underway the day after the latest fire, thanks to grants secured by The Friends of Langlands Moss (FOLM) and donations.

However, the entire boardwalk has been closed due to the significant damage caused by last week’s fire and a third of the nature reserve is badly burnt.

FOLM are now calling on supporters to once again rally round to help restore the area.

Chair Maureen Potter said: “We are having a clean-up of the Moss on Saturday, June 3, between 10am and noon and would welcome as much help as possible.

“We had a meeting last week and we have drafted a remedial plan for the Langlands Moss area.

“This has been discussed with our funders, who will be happy to continue to support us once the plan is finalised and costed.

“We have also set up our Gofundme page, which can be found on the Friends of Langlands Moss Facebook page.”
