Farewell to Sandy
East Kilbride News online readers were upset to learn of Sandy McBain’s death – the man who was dubbed ‘Mr Olympia’.
But they were quick to salute a man who brought the big names to East Kilbride and put the new town on the map.
Margaret Roaland Aitken said: “He was a remarkable person, and a fund of mad stories! The loss of both Sandy and Mary is tragic, best wishes to family members.”
Sharon Paton said: “Sandy was a most likeable person, full of funny anecdotes. He helped so much with our museum’s football exhibition many years ago.
“His knowledge and enthusiasm was unlimited.”
Jenny Stewart said: “They were lovely neighbours of ours and Mary taught me to drive.”
Shirley Conway said: “I have fond memories of discos with school friends from Hunter High at The Olympia.”
Jim Paton added: “I saw some great rock bands in The Big O in the seventies; so grateful to Sandy for the experience.”
John Doyle posted: “Glad to have known him and shared some memorable moments (and a couple of jars) at The Big O.”
Norma Logan replied: “The Big O days were great. Lots of happy memories. Thanks Sandy.”
