40 YEARS AGO

The Heatherykn­owe depot of Appleyard (Lanarkshir­e) Ltd was set to close. The closure was due to changes in Leyland Cars franchisin­g policy.

Of the 14 employed there, four were being offered employment at the company’s principal depot at Hamilton and others were to stay on the site which would be run by new management.

Jamieson Drive in Calderwood was the scene of another street party to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Around 25 kids enjoyed sports and games and the adults enjoyed a barbecue.

Little Lynsey Cochrane was born on a very special day – the 30th birthday of East Kilbride. Her family was presented with a bouquet of flowers.

30 YEARS AGO

Everything at the Crossroads Grand Charity Auction in the Ballerup Hall went...went .... went. The organisers were delighted with the success of the event which raised a staggering £1588 for the charity’s care attendant scheme.

Serious splits and behind the scene conflicts in the East Kilbride Labour Party were rumoured after the leaking of an internal party letter which contained allegation­s about party members.

20 YEARS AGO

The battle between the city of Glasgow and the determined South Lanarkshir­e Council over a proposed rubbish dump on the greenbelt continued.

A public inquiry got underway at the Ballerup Hall.

East Kilbride was on the brink of a nuclear disaster. However, the fallout wouldn’t damage the environmen­t but Scotland’s ability to remain at the forefront of scientific research and technology. The bill for decommissi­oning the old nuclear reactor at the Technology Park was over £5m.
