Campbell signs off on a high

- Paul Thomson

Billy Campbell has resigned as East Kilbride Thistle boss — just days after leading the club to promotion.

The Jags beat Newmains 1-0 on Saturday to earn promotion to the Central District First Division next season.

But they will now begin planning for the 2017/18 campaign without Campbell who, along with his assistant Gary Johnstone, has stepped down from his role at the Showpark.

After leading Thistle to their first promotion since 2006, Campbell told the News: “I felt the time was right to give someone else a go.

“I’m happy that we are bowing out on top and have put the club in as strong a position as it’s been in for some years.

“I told the boys on Saturday night. I was so focused on promotion I didn’t want to mention anything until after the game.

“I’ve been at the Showpark for a few seasons now and someone else should give it a shot.

“There is a great bunch of people at the club and I leave on fantastic terms.

“I wish everyone the best for the future.”

Campbell took the reins from Alan Wardlaw in 2015 after serving as his assistant at Thistle for two years.
