Terror incident raises concerns over threat

Locals will not live in fear of future attacks

- Andrea O’Neill

Britain is standing united after the Manchester suicide bomb attack which claimed the lives of 22 innocent people.

The despicable act of terror on young people attending a pop concert raised the UK terror threat level to ‘critical’ last week, meaning more attacks were imminent.

In light of the recent atrocity at an Ariana Grande gig in Manchester Arena, we asked East Kilbride shoppers if they have been put off attending arena-type events which attract big crowds.

Martin Montgomery, 46, of St Leonards said: “I think it would be in the back of your mind – there’s always a risk – but it’s highly unlikely that something is going to happen to you so it wouldn’t put me off. I think having troops on our streets is just a knee-jerk reaction.”

Calum McLeod, 17, of Whitehills said: “I would be a little bit edgy until it all calms down but I would still go to big events. “You just have to get on with life.” Cameron West, 18, from Greenhills added: “It would put me off right now after something like this has happened. I’d be worried to be in a big crowd.”

Paul McConnochie, 54, of St Leonards said: “I have a 15-year-old daughter so I would be concerned about her going to a concert. The terrorists shouldn’t win though, the country should unite against them and not live in fear.”
