Challenge for Simon

- Mark Pirie

Strathaven’s Gala Day parade has been saved after a new director took over the reins.

Simon Cameron has been announced as the new man in charge of the big day.

The parade kicks off the famous gala events and involves schools and community groups from across Strathaven and the surrounding districts.

Outgoing parade director Douglas Lamb had revealed that if he was not replaced, the popular parade could be cut from the annual celebration.

However, Simon – who has close connections at the local rugby club – put himself forward to help organise the event which he has enjoyed since moving to the town 12 years ago.

Having watched his two sons take part in the walk around town, he admits he is nervous to make the move from parent to organiser but cannot wait to get started. He said: “I’m very proud to be involved and can’t wait to get started.

“It is a focal point of the gala week and is a big part of the town.

“There is a bit of pressure to make it as good as I remember it being every year but hopefully the day goes off without a hitch.”

Simon now begins the process of looking through applications to be a part of parade, with the help of the gala committee.

Committee member Ross McKay said: “We’re delighted that Simon is our new parade director for this year and thanks to him for stepping into what is a key role for Gala Day and helping to make sure the parade goes ahead and runs smoothly.

“We’re expecting another big turnout of floats and pageants, with some great bands coming from across Scotland, too.”
