Outdoor learning at school
Youngsters at Heathery Knowe Primary School enjoyed the great outdoors recently.
Room 3 at the Whitehills school have been enjoying outdoor learning.
The children developed their skills in working as a team to build tents in the playground and enjoyed spending time reading and storytelling in them. A group of S2 and S3 pupils from Calderglen High School competed in the youth rocketry challenge in the Scotland leg of the UK heats recently.
Zara Legowski, Jennifer Marshall, Innes Reilly, Joshua Robertson and Adam Rodgers were tasked with designing and building a rocket to reach a height of 775ft, which shoud then separate, landing in two parachuted sections containing a raw egg as payload which should remain intact.
They have been working on this project after school for the last two months.
The pupils started with their first flight of 549ft and successfully landed the egg.
However, through their ingenuity and using a philosophy of making ‘marginal gains’in aerodynamics and weight reduction, the final qualifying flight achieved a height of 762 ft with a total flight time of 71 seconds and landing their egg in perfect condition.
Mr John Bonsor, representative from UKRoC youth rocketry challenge, complimented the pupils on their exemplary conduct throughout the day and their enthusiasm for the project.
