Bond has licence to thrill EK festival

Comedy drama takes top prize at Repfest

- Andrea O’Neill

Hilarious romp ‘Bonking James Bond’ scooped the top prize at EK Repfest.

Fintry Amateur Dramatic Society’s comedy drama, written by April Phillips, was described as a “tour de force” in a thrilling week of competitive theatre at the Village Theatre.

The production was the finale to four days of one-act plays hosted by EK Rep Theatre.

Over the week theatre-goers enjoyed a host of dramas and comedies from clubs from as far afield as Campbeltown, Carluke, Greenock, Fintry, Rutherglen and Glasgow.

EK Rep chair Fiona McCann opened the awards ceremony with a few words of thanks to those behind the scenes and to festival organiser Anne Macfie – but most of all to the audiences who turned out through the week.

This year’s adjudicator was Paul Dougall who summed up the festival by saying that he had seen the ‘three Ts’ that he looks for: timing, tempo and transition.

He also noted that one or two of the younger actors that he had seen before “were becoming nicely rounded actors with marked improvement”.

And the plays, some written by the clubs themselves, had “shown a range and density of challenges between the actors and the directors”.

The winners were: 1, (John McNicol Trophy) ‘Bonking James Bond’ by Fintry Amateur Dramatic Society; 2, (Arts Council Trophy) ‘The Pushcart Peddlers’ by Fintry Amateur Dramatic Society; 3, (Whitemoss Trophy) ‘Feeding The Ducks’ by Kirkton Players; Best Actor (Alf Davidson Trophy) Jack Doyle, Fintry Amateur Dramatic Society; Best Actress (EK Rep The Club Trophy) Jackie Smith, Fintry Amateur Dramatic Society; Best Staging (Betty McAuley Trophy) ‘The Magic Roundabout’ by Accent Players of Campbeltown.

Next year’s EK Repfest is from May 7 to May 12. A season ticket for the year will allow free entry to the one-act play festival as well as five plays throughout the season.
