A first class First Lady

-

Jackie (15)

A memorable showcase for the former First Lady packs in many twists and turns across its days-long setting.

Natalie Portman embodies Kennedy with gravitas, determination and fragility in an acting tour-de-force.

The classy script peers beneath the surface of the great woman to uncover a great many unknown truths.

Underworld: Blood Wars (15)

The fifth in the vampires-versuswerewolves series is the weakest yet.

Kate Beckinsale once again squeezes into the PVC as heroine Selene, who feels like an afterthought among the multitude of plot strands.

Despite some dodgy CGI, the action is decent – but many of the scrapes feel Game of Thrones-lite.

Rings (15)

Twelve years on from the risible Ring 2, this long-gestating follow-up feels unnecessary.

It starts and ends in intriguing fashion – with the infamous video tape being upgraded to newer, more dangerous technology– but everything in between doesn’t cut the mustard.

Lead lovebirds Matilda Lutz and Alex Roe are duller than the desaturated colour palette and The Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki looks like he can’t be bothered.

The story moves on from more interesting ideas – a college group studying the curse – to a dull further look into the ghostly Samara’s origin.

A pity as there are creepy moments, and a final twist hints at a better sequel that may never see the light of day.
