Electric Candy are pride of the town

Youngsters win big at national championships

- Nicola Findlay

A group of East Kilbride cheerleaders rose to the challenge at National and European championships recently.

Electric Candy Cheerleaders, who were established in 1999, took to the stage at Scotcheer’s Scottish National and European championships in the Armadillo in Glasgow.

Over 3000 cheerleaders and parents attended the event .

Electric Candy took along their 45strong competitive athletes to compete in cheer, jazz and hip hop.

And the group managed to bring home a trophy in every division.

Coach Nicola Hamilton told the News: “This was a massive victory in itself as the standard was so high and there were so many teams in each division.

“But the biggest surprise and trophies to shout out about was the first-place award for their Tiny Cheer Division as they were up against seven other teams.

“This was the first time they had every competed in Cheer but the four to six-year-olds took it in there stride and smashed it.

“Their performance and standard of routine was beyond their years and blew the judges away with their perfection and composure of the routine.”

Nicola went on: “This team have been dedicated all year with their attendance and effort in class so I always believed they would do well at competition but to win in such a big division for their first time was amazing.

“Just when they thought it could not get any better the following day the trophies kept coming, but even more so to the delight of parents, the youngest took to the stage like true professionals and gave a heartwarming performance to the Twilight song A Thousand Years

“There wasn’t a dry eye in the house and once again they walked away with a trophy taller than themselves.”

Electric Candy tend to do well at competition and often return home with with trophies in first to fifth places, as they did here.

And proud Nicola added: “When the youngest of the team are wining so early on you know the future of the team is in good hands and the next 18 years of Electric Candy is looking positive.

“We don’t take on lots of kids throughout the year, we prefer a small team so we can perfect their technique. Nor do we have a fancy gym but this is the evidence that good coaching and the dedication of parents and cheerleaders surpasses anything.”
