Striker Mark hopes switch to Stenny brings him some goals

- Paul Thomson

Stenhousemuir new boy Mark McGuigan hopes he can get back to enjoying football again after a frustrating spell at Stranraer.

The striker signed for the Warriors a fortnight ago after a two-year stint at Stair Park where he made 89 appearances and scored 16 goals.

However, the last year has been stop-start for the Newlandsmuir ace after being hampered by injury and struggling to hold down a starting slot.

Now he hopes dropping down to League Two with Brown Ferguson’s Stenny will help him find his love for football again. McGuigan told the News: “It’s been a frustrating season for me.

“I didn’t get a lot of game time and I picked up some niggles that made me miss a lot of games through injury.

“I felt as though I couldn’t get any momentum going when I managed to play. It was really stop-start.

“You need regular games to play your way into form but I wasn’t able to do that.

“Taking everything into consideration, I thought it was time to move on and I’ve left Stranraer on good terms.

“I’m 28 now, so I’m not a wee boy anymore and happy to bide my time and wait for my chance. I want to play games and get back to enjoying my football.

“A couple of clubs had expressed an interest in me as well but I got a good feeling speaking to Brown and hearing what he wants to achieve here.

“Stenny don’t intend on hanging about League Two for long and I hope I can help them go straight back up.”

McGuigan has tasted promotion success in League Two already in his career, helping Albion Rovers win the division in 2014/15.

And he has been reunited with old team-mates Mick and Ross Dunlop, who made the switch from Cliftonhill to Ochilview last week.

So there will be plenty of experience within the squad.

He added: “Taking Stenny up next season is easier said than done but I’ve played in League Two before with Rovers and know what it takes to get promotion.

“We went on a good run and had a good team spirit there, so I hope we can use that experience to help Stenny.

“It’s a really competitive league with not a lot between the teams. But I think we will be a team on the up next season and hopefully we can do enough to take the team back to League One.”
