To complete the double, but it may be Lauchlan’s last act

“He’s one of my favourite players. I played that position myself and I think he was unbelievable today.

“I was speaking to (Falkirk legend) Alex Smith and he was saying if he was at a lower-league club, he’d take Adam in a minute. Anyone there watching, if they don’t take Strachan they would be crazy.

“I thought he was outstanding. His fitness was incredible and we are lucky to have him at East Kilbride.

“He was everywhere and for us to have someone of his quality at this club all season has been terrific. He’s destined for higher things.”

On his side’s cup-winning performance, he added: “We bounced back really well from last week’s huge disappointment at Cowdenbeath.

“I thought we were absolutely first class. The first half we came out the traps quickly and some of the football was the best we’ve played all season, the one and two touch stuff we were playing.

“You could see they were playing without pressure today, they enjoyed it and I think at the end the boys had put so much into it they were running on empty a bit.

“But they still came through and it’s been an unbelievably successful season.”

The trophy win is Kilby’s seventh in four seasons and maintains their record of winning a piece of silverware in every campaign since they entered the Lowland setup in 2013.

After their best-ever season, Sean Winter insists it is vital the club hold on to the nucleus of their title-winning squad to ensure they are back challenging for a place in League Two again in 2018.

He said: “This team has showed we are more than capable of competing in League Two after taking Cowdenbeath to penalties, so if we can keep this squad together we will give ourselves the best chance of winning the league and getting back to the play-offs next season.

“It’s important the club get the likes of myself, Barry Russell and David Proctor on board and that can help attract some of the younger ones to stay on.

“There’s guys like Kieran Gibbons — our player of the year — who have been outstanding and he deserves a chance to go back to full-time football.

“But it’s up to him if he wants to go there and play a few games or stay here, be a key part of the team and give it one more bash to get us up to the senior leagues.

“I think 90 per cent of our players will have other offers, so it’s up to the powers that be to entice them to stay on.”
