Achievements in Malta

- Nicola Findlay

Calderglen High has been part of a European Agency project aimed at raising the achievement of all pupils – and the school got top marks for their work at a recent conference.

The school was put forward for this project by Education Scotland three years ago and selected as one of three schools from Europe – the other two schools were from Italy and Poland.

Calderglen High staff, with Sanderson High staff, worked with the two other countries on the project, sharing insights, learning from each other and hosting visits from the partner schools as well as from delegates from across Europe. Staff from Calderglen High also visited the schools in Italy and Poland.

In April a delegation of six staff, three senior pupils and a parent presented at a Raising Achievement for All Conference.

This was to mark the end of the project and share findings and key learning.

They delivered workshops and presentations to an international audience of educators and policy makers, including Maltese Government Ministers.

Staff delivered workshops on improving outcomes for all pupils in an inclusive setting to researchers, head teachers, university lecturers and professors, policy makers and local and regional authority representatives.

The Calderglen team also gave a final project presentation to the entire 200 conference delegates from across Europe where three senior pupils – Katrina Livingstone, Allan Woodhouse, Susan Woodhouse confidently delivered to a delighted and highly impressed audience insights from their learner journey and the impact of strategies to support them.

They also worked with pupils from Italy, Poland and Malta to deliver to the audience video and oral presentations on what they consider achievement to be.

Parent – Mr Andrew Brawley – chair of Sanderson High parent council and depute chair of Calderglen parent council – represented both Sanderson and Calderglen high schools and added significant value to Calderglen’s contributions.

He said:“The Malta Raising Attainment conference was an eye opening experience for me.

“Seeing the team skills and camaraderie across the participants was inspiring.

“The capability on show from both teaching staff and pupils alike gives me a renewed level of confidence for the future of education. On a final note the“team”ethic displayed was wonderful to be part of.”

Head teacher Liz White said:“On an international platform our senior pupils excelled and represented Scottish Education so admirably.

“Educators from across Europe learned from our staff, pupils and parent group in detail about some of the work we have been doing in Calderglen High to improve outcomes for all learners.

“They concluded that much of what we have learned and implemented has been of an exceptionally high quality and worth sharing widely.

“We have seen strong progress in ensuring equity of outcome for all learners and in dismantling barriers which then allows many young people to progress with greater pace. Staff, pupils and parent all benefitted from hearing how different countries ensure better outcomes for those most in need.”
