Masterton wins back East Ren for the Tories
Eaglesham residents woke up on Friday morning to discover that a new MP would serve for East Renfrewshire.
Paul Masterton secured victory for the Scottish Conservatives who made a big gain at the SNP’s expense.
Mr Masterton clinched 40 per cent of the vote which was enough to see Kirsten Oswald, fighting to retain the seat for the Nationalists, end up in second place.
And he fired a warning to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, urging the SNP leader to bin plans for a second Scottish independence referendum.
“I am absolutely humbled by my election and wish to thank everyone in East Renfrewshire who put their faith in me,”said Mr Masterton.
“Whether you voted for me or not, I will be a member of parliament working hard to improve the lives of all in East Renfrewshire and our local community.
“This was not just a freak election in East Renfrewshire but a Scotland-wide revolt against the SNP’s neverendum obsession.
“The voters demanded it and now Nicola Sturgeon must act on it – no second independence referendum.”
Villagers in Carmunnock are served by the MP for Glasgow South and that will again be Stewart McDonald.
He retained the seat for the Nationalists with a majority of 2027.
Mr McDonald said:“An enormous privilege to have your trust placed in me once again.
“It’s no exaggeration to say that it is the greatest honour to be elected to serve the people of Glasgow South.
“I look forward to working with you again.”
