Charity lands cash boost

£14,500 injection

- Andrea O’Neill

East Kilbride Dementia Carers Group can now “survive and thrive” after receiving a £14,500 boost during Volunteer Week.

After struggling to stay afloat at the start of the year, the Greenhills-based organisation was presented with the bumper donation by its charity partner M&S Kingsgate.

M&S has committed to supporting its colleagues in delivering one million hours of community volunteering by 2025.

And staff at the local store kickstarted the volunteering in East Kilbride by renovating the garden area at the carers centre in Pine Crescent.

Brian Doig, group coordinator for East Kilbride Dementia Carers, said: “We are totally overwhelmed at the support we have had from M&S Kingsgate over the past year and the generosity from their customers and staff in raising a whopping £14,549.22 to help our charity not just survive but thrive.

“This gardening project will benefit all service users and staff from the centre and we would like to thank all of the volunteers from the bottom of our hearts.”

The work was carried out as part of the Make it Matter initiative which aims to help make a difference to the projects and initiatives that are important in the communities they serve.

Make it Matter is part of the recently launched M&S campaign #SpenditWell which looks to inspire people to make every moment special by focusing on the experiences, people and things that really matter in life.

Robert Chalmers, store manager of M&S Kingsgate, said: “We’re really excited to be coming together to support the East Kilbride Dementia Carers Group.

“Volunteering can make a profound difference to the communities in which we live, work and play. We believe that lots of the small actions from lots of people, can collectively have a huge impact.”
